WNBA star Brittney Griner has been liberated in a detainee trade between the U.S. also, Russia after almost 10 months of detainment, President Biden said Thursday.
Driving the news: The U.S. liberated sentenced Russian arms seller Viktor Session in a trade for Griner that occurred in the Unified Bedouin Emirates, as per a senior organization official. Russian media film showed the pair momentarily passing each other on the runway in Abu Dhabi.
- “Through numerous, different commitments, the Russians clarified that the main course to getting Brittney’s return” was Session’s delivery, the authority said.
Catch up quick: Griner was captured in February after Russian specialists said they found a vape cartridge with weed oil in her baggage.

The big picture: Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in late July that the U.S. had made a “significant proposition” to the Kremlin to get the arrival of Griner and previous Marine Paul Whelan. Blinken said both were “illegitimately confined.”
- Reports proposed the Biden organization might want to trade Session, who was carrying out a 25-year jail punishment in the U.S., for Griner and Whelan’s opportunity.
